TGIF #5

Question: Book Appeal: When you're browsing goodreads, the library, or another blogger's reviews, what grabs your attention to make you want to read it?

What grabs my attention when browsing for books is the cover of the book!! For sure! If there is an awesome picture or great colors on the cover then I immediately grab it and start reading the synopsis. I'm not one of those people who will read the book just because of what the book cover looks like. I am, however, one of those people who becomes interested in finding out about a book because of how interesting the cover is. If it is boring or ugly I probably won't take the time to figure out what it is about but If it looks awesome then I will.

Examples:

This cover is gorgeous. The contrast of the black and red mixed with the smokey swirl would catch my eye and make me curious as to what it is about.

This book looks boring to me. There is nothing that stands out about the cover, it would just blend in with every other book on the shelves. That is not to say that this book isn't great (I haven't read it, so I wouldn't know...) but I likely would not read it unless it was recommended to me by a friend.

What do you guys think? What draws you in to reading a book or review?

  1. Covers are definitely what catches my eye first when it comes to a book. I've been known to step into a bookstore and grab 15 books in 5 minutes, all based on cover alone ;)

  2. Everneath is on the list of books I'm considering for Shelf Candy! The cover is sooo stunningly beautiful! A cover like that can definitely make me grab it off the shelf (or click the picture when browsing), but I've read so many great books with awful covers (such as Hunger Games) that I would have to say the thing I base my decisions on most by is the summary. Unless I've gotten multiple recommendations for a book, I may also read reviews, because often times reviewers write better summaries better than publishers.

    1. That is so true! The covers are what draw me in, the summary is what convinces me to read it. I absolutely loved the Hunger Games trilogy and I agree that the cover isn't that great... It actually took me a while to decide to read this book because the cover made it look kind of boring...

I can't wait to read Everneath! I have heard such great things about it!
